George Floyd vs USA
Today CNN breaking news stated that the ex-Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin that was responsible for George Floyds death has posted $1 million bail and is no longer is in custody. I was in shock because after all that happened with the video evidence, I was expecting him to do some jail time. I know this hasn't only shocked me but this has shocked a lot of people because of the BLM movement that has been happening across the globe. While hearing this news I was in the middle of watching the Netflix series “When They See Us” which is about five young people in 1989 were falsely accused of assaulting and raping a women in New York’s Central Park and served jail time for 12 years until they were fully exonerated of all charges in 2002. It made me realize that police brutality has not been solved yet and the system is failing us. It has been going on for decades and I always wondered why it hasn’t been stopped. For the 24 hours I wanted to experience what it was like on the other side of the spectrum of not police brutality in general but the specific George Floyd case. I wanted to dig deeper on Derek Chauvin! Guilty of this, we tend to get persuaded by the media and believe what we see and hear wether its only social media, news channels and even our friends and family. I found two news channels that I find to be some what different views from what they post. CNN I believe to have the leaned towards left wing views while USA today tends to lean towards right wings point of views. Both news channels never neither claim that Derek Chauvin innocent, although USA today is one of the few news channels that reported that their is false assumptions on Derek Chauvin. For example, there was a picture that was spread through social media of Derek Chauvin at a Trump rally wearing a “Make America White Again” hat.
The Minneapolis Police Union had to make an announcement regarding the false picture and that none of the police that were at the scene of the George Floyd incident were at the Trump Ralley. This had effected me because I saw this and I’m guilty of retweeting that and reposting that photo because it did looked realistic. After reading that was false, it effected me because it made me realize how much we are manipulated by what we see online. I’m not saying what Derek Chauvin did was acceptable in any way, but it effected me because It made me feel stupid for sharing that posts of a false photo. When I saw that photo it made me think he is definitely racist. Don’t get me wrong, there is a high chance that he could be because unfortunately we see police brutality against black people a lot more than on white people. The photo seemed to make that clear but now that I know it wasn’t him in the photo, it made me question my judgements on him. Even after reading USA today and the false assumptions it didn’t convince me that he should looked at any worse that he already has been after what he did. I believe that he is racist after what he did because of how much police brutality we see to black people these days. I wish for a brighter future where all people are treated the same. I wish for us come together as community and bring change to this world!
